Tin Moe, born Maung Ba Gyan

Tin Moe, born Maung Ba Gyan (November 19, 1933 – January 22, 2007), was a Burmese poet.

Tin Moe was born in the village of Kan Mye Zagyan in Taungtha township, Myingyan, Mandalay Division. He received his early education at a Buddhist monastery, and attended the University of Mandalay at the request of faculty members who had been impressed by an essay he wrote. In 1956 he collected his poetry into a book, published in 1959 as Phan Mee Ain (English: The Lantern). He continued to write poems and essays, and worked for a time as the editor of Pay Phoo Lwar magazine. An active supporter of the pro-democracy movement, Tin was imprisoned in 1991 for 4 years by Burma's military government for his activities. After his release he moved to the United States as an exile and traveled through the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia attending literary events. He died January 22, 2007 in his home in From his home in Los Angeles, California at the age of 73.
